Chapter Five: Stone

Tap. Tap. Tap.

A light tap on the window of my office wakes me. I look over and Grace sleeps like an angel. I roll off the cot and put on my clothes. Quietly making my way out the door, I find my youngest sibling, Belle, sitting on the bench in front of my office.

“What’s up, Belle? Everything okay?” I whisper.

She looks around suspiciously and then over her shoulder before responding.

She leans in and whispers. “I was here late last night. Mom asked me to grab something from Dad’s office. But I saw you and Grace.”

My skin turns pale and I tug at my collar. “Uh…”

“Don’t worry, I didn’t see anything beyond you guys kissing on your way into your office. But I figured since you haven’t moved your truck, you two never made it home last night.”

“Sis, please don’t say anything. I don’t want to do anything to put Grace’s job or mine at risk.”

“You know me,” she says. “My lips are sealed. But I came here to give you a wake-up call so no one walks in on you two. I heard Hunter and Reed saying they needed to go to your office.”

“Did I ever tell you, you’re an amazing sister?”

She quietly laughs. “Yeah, yeah. I’ve got to go but you and Grace better get moving.” She points at our brothers across the ranch. “They’re coming.”

“Thanks, Belle,” I call out to her as she walks away.

My brothers approach quickly and start up the stairs to my office.

“You can’t go in there.” I put my hand in front of my two brothers, stopping them.

“Why not?” Reed asks.

“Yeah,” Hunter chimes in. “I need to grab my hat. I left it in there yesterday morning when I came in to steal a donut,” he laughs. “Calm down, I’ll be fast. I promise.” He sidesteps around me and reaches for the handle.

“Guys,” I shout. “I said no. Not right now.”

With a stern look on my face, I almost dare them to challenge me on this. They glance at each other, then throw their hands up to surrender as they back down the steps.

Hunter nudges Reed and whispers loudly, “He’s sure in a great mood.”

“Actually, I am in a great mood,” I relax the muscles in my face. “Wait out here, I’ll get your hat.”

Cracking the door open slowly, I tiptoe inside. Gazing at Grace, my heart warms as she’s still sound asleep on the cot. I pick up Hunter’s hat from the corner of the room and quietly let myself out. Carefully shutting the door behind me, I quietly clomp down the steps and toss the hat to Hunter.

“Oh, I see what’s going on here,” Reed says with a grin. Facing Hunter, he nods gesturing in my direction with his head. “He’s got a girl in there.”

Hunter’s eyes widen and he exclaims, “Oh really? Who is it? Do we know her?”

“Shh,” I charge toward them and push the group further from the door. “You two don’t know what you’re talking about.”

The two of them chuckle.
